 Drug use is not a recent problem. It has a long history. Jataka story books testify to the use of drugs even in Buddhist times. This is a brief overview of the drug menace that has begun and has recently become a major menace.

 First of all, it is important to mention the drug menace in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has a long history of drug abuse. It dates back to 1505 when the Portuguese invaded Sri Lanka. After the Portuguese introduced opium to Ceylon, opium and cannabis gradually spread. From the beginning to the end of the 70's, Sri Lanka became a victim of the heroin menace. After 1977, with an open economy, it grew rapidly. This is the unintended consequence of the open economy. The location of Sri Lanka is also one of the reasons for the high incidence of drugs in Sri Lanka. In addition, the tourism industry was a major factor in the spread of drugs in Sri Lanka. However, it is a great tragedy that Sri Lanka is now ahead of other countries in the list of drug addicts.

Second, it is important to discuss the causes of drug use. This is due to physical, mental and environmental factors. Family problems, work, associates are a special reason why a person becomes addicted to drugs. Drugs are one of the main tools used by people today to express their feelings of happiness and sadness. So it has become a part of life. It also promotes drug abuse through the media, which can attract even young children.

It is a tragedy that so much of the impact here has been on the younger generation. The youth of a country are the backbone of that country. Therefore, this catastrophe is a disaster for the whole country. Adolescents are more likely to become addicted to drugs later in life. This can lead to permanent and irreversible damage to the brain later on. Emotional problems are also a serious problem affecting the younger generation. Drug use can cause emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and schizophrenia. Adverse effects of drug abuse on young people include disruption of education, sexual misconduct, increased car accidents, and chronic illness (Sexual dysfunction)
